It has been a great week for photography here in Tahoe - I'm excited about this new image I was able to get a few nights ago. The wildflowers have been very happy with all the rain. The wind cooperated long enough to let me capture this with my H3d (it was a 1.5 second exposure with split ND filter to hold back the sky). Most of the shots were blurry with the flowers blowing, but a brief lull allowed this shot. I also took some backup shots with my Nikon D700 but always prefer the H3D files if they come out clean & not wind blown.
I am off to photograph the Bristlecones in the White Mountains next week. This Saturday we are displaying at the Calistoga Art in the Park, stop by & say hi if you are in the area.
Hi Elisabeth,
I'm a big fan of your images. But in the last time I'm a tittle confused about your hardware wasting.
First you bought the Nikon D3. Then you changed it into the D3x, a great camera btw and now you speaks about a D700 you shot. And all that bodys you want to sell again for a new Hasselblad?
Are your experiences with Nikon so bad? I think it's hard to compare a body of $7.000 with a body of $27.000 I's the same as you wanted to compare a VW car with a Porsche. But who can afford a Porsche in these days? Honestly, what do you think about the D3x? What lenses did you use with the D3x in Italy? Thank you for helping to form an opinion.
All the best and always good light,
Holger
BTW, thanks for the 2009 calender I got when I visited your gallery with my wife last summer. Great images as always! I wish I could join you to the Bristlecones we went last year. Please check my website and blog and let me know, what a pro think about my work.

Hi Holger - thanks for your comments. Yes, it does seem like I try out alot of Nikon cameras - I started with the D3 when that was introduced and really liked the image files and low light image capability. I sold that to buy a D3x for my trip to Italy since I did not want to lug the H3d over there. I was pleased with the D3x files for travel photography, and have made a series of 25x40" canvas prints that I am very pleased with. You can see my comparison of the files with the H3d here:
http://ecarmel.typepad.com/elizabeth_carmels_photogr/2009/05/new-series-response-to-inquires-todays-topic-hasselblad-h3d-vs-nikon-d3x.html
I sold that for what I paid for it since I am now trying to fund purchase of the H3d 60 megapixel system. The D700 is a great compromise camera since it is not as pricey as the D3/D3x and is lighter but has the same sensor as the D3. The D700 files can be enlarged no problem to 20x30, and even bigger with a little extra retouching work. It is my view with camera equipment that the price you pay is the initial price minus what you will eventually sell it for. Technology moves very rapidly and in a few years we may all be using systems similar to the new RED motion cameras for still capture.
